Endodontics

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with root canal treatment of teeth affected by diseases of the dental pulp and nerve due to untreated tooth decay or injury. The dental treatment is very demanding in terms of care and experience of the doctor, as well as time (treatment of multi-rooted teeth - molars - may take up to 4 hours). During treatment, the doctor focuses on stopping inflammation, perfect root canal cleaning, disinfecting and closing of the tooth.

When is root canal treatment used?

A root canal is performed in case of inflammation, bacterial infection, injury, etc., when changes inside the tooth, inflammation and pulp necrosis occur. The trauma of the tooth is manifested by great pain, however, there are cases when the pain occurs after the inflammation has spread and the effect is extensive. Inflammation may even affect the surrounding tissue or the adjacent bone. Root canal treatment has effect on gum disease and is often the only solution necessary to save the tooth.

In some situations, it is necessary to perform endodontic treatment even on healthy teeth, for example, for prosthetic reasons.

How does the treatment proceed?

When treating these kinds of problems, it is necessary to stop the inflammation and spread of infection. It is therefore necessary to remove the infected tooth pulp and the tooth nerve, clean the root canal walls thoroughly, disinfect the tooth, fill the tooth cavity and hermetically close it.

Dentist performs the treatment under local anesthesia, thus the patient feels no pain.

Difficulty of this treatment is presented by the root canals themselves because they tend to have different shapes, sections, varying winds, branches and curves. In addition, their number in individual roots of teeth can vary. The problem is their diameter because some channels are very thin (like hair).

Treatment belongs to the most demanding in the dental office.  In order for the treatment to be successful, it is necessary to treat the canal in its entirety, so an x-ray is a necessary part of the treatment, however, modern equipment, quality tool and materials, as well as thoroughness, are also essential.

Root canal aftercare

After endodontic treatment and cure of inflammation, visible part of the tooth must be taken care of. After treatment, the tooth is mostly hollow, composite filling is used to fill the crown which strengthens the tooth and seals the crown. If only the tooth root is left, a suitable solution is a root canal inlay and a crown, which will replace the tooth.

Essential information

Our clinic provides the most modern technical equipment, which significantly affects the high success rate of these interventions. During the procedure, the doctor uses a special surgical microscope, which enables capture of every detail otherwise imperceptible by the naked eye.  Among the common equipment are rotary tools that reduce the treatment to a minimum and special nickel-titan tools that can treat very narrow and curved canals.
