Branemark implant
The Branemark implant system offers a complete solution using crowns, bridges and implants.
What does the Branemark implant solve?
Branemark implant replaces the original teeth functionally and aesthetically. It can be used for either the lower or the upper edentulous jaw, or for both jaws simultaneously. Implants serve as a support for the restoration, so the bridge is permanently attached in the jaw providing the patient with more comfort, confidence during speaking and the possibility of trouble-free food chewing. It is a conditionally removable restoration which is screwed to the implants, so the doctor can remove it – take it off/unscrew it, if necessary.
Who is the Branemark implant suitable for?
Branemark implant is ideal for all dental restorations in patients whose jaw or both jaws are edentulous, when they do not want to solve the loss of teeth with dentures. Fabrication of this particular dental restoration limits the condition of the jawbone, its thickness and resilience that is necessary for the placement of implants. The doctor introduces all possibilities to the patient after the initial examination and analysis.
What happens prior to the placement of the Branemark implant?
Placement of the Branemark implant is preceded by a thorough examination of the state of the jaws and gums, x-ray examination, or even extraction of few remaining teeth. For anchoring of the Branemark implant, 5 implants are placed in the lower jaw, more implants are needed in the upper jaw . Implants are sufficiently reliable, so if the patient still has some teeth that are in bad condition, it is preferable to remove them. Solution using implants is much better than a solution when implants are combined with the remaining teeth. During individual consultation, a doctor informs the patient about the possible ways of addressing the problems and the necessary steps.
The implants require an appropriate size of jawbone. Therefore, in some cases, the jawbone must be modified first, so that the implant is surrounded by enough bone to ensure adequate support. This problem is solved by a so-called augmentation surgery. It uses a series of procedures, some are not demanding and are carried out simultaneously with the placement of implants, others require special surgical procedure where an artificial material is used to fill the bone or the bone is thickened using the patient’s own bone tissue transplants taken from the chin, shin or hipbone, for example. These procedures of jaw augmentation require relatively long period of healing (6-9 months).
Placement/application of the Branemark implant
Branemark implant is fabricated in a dental laboratory based on impressions made by the doctor. The dental restoration consists of metal base in combination with porcelain or resin, but it can also be a ceramic bridge made without metal.
Our clinic prefers models with the metal base in combination with resin and factory fabricated teeth, because metal construction is strong enough, resin meets the aesthetic requirements and plastic replacement teeth are springy, so the bone is protected against an excessive load. Such restoration is also repaired more easily, if the teeth are damaged, scuffed and worn out. They can be replaced at any time and the dental restoration on the metal base can be restored.
Subsequent care
The care after the placement of the Branemark dental implant is similar to the care of fixed bridges. Perfect dental hygiene is important as well as regular check-ups at the doctor’s office (according to the doctor’s recommendations). The doctor checks the condition of the restoration and the implant, or the bridge is cleaned, polished and re-attached.
